I'm several days behind schedule, but I did read a book or two in September.

A Walk in the Park: The True Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon - Kevin Fedarko

This is an epic of a travel diary written by a National Geographic reporter. Walking the length of the Grand Canyon - a rare accomplishment measured in just a few dozen people - seemed like something he and his colleague Pete could do given that they've been to the extremes of the world already, but it whipped them, hard.

The book walks through the canyon's geology, history, culture, and current state through the eyes of a true reporter. Wading through each chapter brought new insight, new people, and new stories which paralleled their walk. It's worth tracking down his article in the September 2016 edition of National Geographic which includes more photos and more detail on the Convergence resort fight.

Old Man's War - John Scalzi

This was a little bit of Startship Troopers (the book, not the movie) meets Tom Clancy. In the future, the elderly are able to enlist in the Colonial Defense Forces to protect humanity's fledgling colonies against aggressive alien species across the galaxy. The main character is flung from planet to planet, wrestling with the reality of war and his role in the war machine when his understanding is inverted after meeting someone he doesn't expect.
